Western grebes rush across the blue lake

Published · Updated

Western grebes rush across the blue lake with their white necks raised and yellow bills pointed ahead. Their bodies sit unusually high above the water, supported for an instant by rapidly moving feet. Small dark wings extend to either side, and a broken trail of spray follows behind them. The pair travels in the same direction with a slight offset between their bodies.

The running feet disturb a narrow strip of water below the birds. Droplets catch the light around their pale chests and dark feather edges, while lake reflections break into short wavering lines in the foreground. Black crowns and bright red eyes remain distinct against the white faces. The bills make a pair of fine horizontal accents within the larger curves of the necks.

Golden reeds form a soft band along the far shore. Beyond them, autumn trees and low hills fade into muted blue and brown shapes. This quieter background gives the brief burst of movement room to stand out. Open water surrounds the birds above and below, preserving the sense of a wide lake while keeping the shared action immediately readable.
