White Balloons Lift the Little Stools

Published · Updated

Enormous white balloons hover beneath the roof of an old assembly hall. Fine lines descend from their tied necks to small white stools below. Some stools touch the floor, while others hang just above it or rise farther into the open space. The difference in scale makes the lightweight furniture seem especially delicate. Seams and slight surface variations remain visible on the pale spheres, giving them a physical presence within the room.

Tall windows admit warm autumn light across the wooden floor. The balloons hold soft shaded undersides, and the stools cast smaller, clearer shadows near the ground. Dark roof trusses and a narrow rear balcony reveal the hall's height. Worn plaster, faded paint and uneven floorboards add texture around the spare installation. With no people or party decorations, the eye follows the thin tethers and compares the different suspended heights. The scene combines the simple shapes of a balloon and a stool into a quiet display of scale, weight and open air, with the whole room left spacious around them.
