Yellow Patchwork Cubes on the Lawn
Published · Updated
Two yellow cubes stand among autumn trees, their strong square shapes softened by an unusual patchwork surface. Hundreds of joined fragments cover the sides in a shifting range of gold, ochre and pale yellow. Small dark fastenings mark the seams, and the individual pieces retain creases, ridges and weathered spots. At the ground, the covering bends outward into loose folds that rest on the grass.
The nearer cube fills much of the view, showing how the stitched surface turns around its corner. A smaller block stands across the lawn beyond a curved gravel path. An empty bench between them gives a familiar measure of their size. Low sunlight passes beneath copper-coloured branches and warms the yellow panels, while the grass in the foreground remains shaded. Fallen leaves and slight dips in the lawn keep the setting ordinary around the striking forms. The cubes hold their simple geometry even as their skins behave like heavy cloth, creating a clear contrast between the rigid volumes and the flexible pieces covering them.
