A basket star unfurls into the blue water
Published · Updated
A basket star spreads its branching arms into deep blue water. The orange center forms a small solid shape within a much larger network of pale curled tips. Thick segmented arms divide into finer branches as they reach outward. Their uneven spacing and loose spirals give the animal an intricate outline that changes from one edge to another.
A purple sea fan rises diagonally beneath it from a rough reef face. The fan has darker, sturdier branches, creating a clear difference between the two forms. Small patches of orange and pale growth break up the rock near the lower left. Beyond that textured surface, the water quickly loses detail and becomes a deep blue backdrop.
Focused underwater light reveals the nearest segments and the tiny curls at their ends. A few drifting specks catch the same light farther above. The tall composition gives the open arms room to spread while keeping their connection to the reef visible. The brightest cream tips sit against the darkest water, making the fine branching easy to follow. Rich purple below and warm orange at the center provide small areas of color within the cool scene.
