A caretaker opens the wind tower shutters

Published · Updated

A wind tower rises above a caretaker as he opens one of its heavy timber shutters. His attention follows the edge of the wood, with one hand guiding the panel and the other resting near the sill. The modest action gives the immense room an everyday purpose. His striped shirt catches the same warm light that falls across the lower wall and worn stone floor.

High overhead, long narrow openings reveal strips of blue sky between thick earthen divisions. Horizontal timber ties cross the shaft, and the ochre plaster carries rough grains, shallow recesses and uneven traces of wear. A simple stair ascends at the far wall beside a tall pierced screen, whose small openings create a separate pattern of bright squares.

The cooling pool occupies the foreground, its deep green water reflecting both the sunlit shaft and the perforated screen. Thick stone edges frame the water without hiding its depth. Warm surfaces and cool reflections draw the eye through the full height of the building, from the practical shutter operation to the open sky far above.
