A Cedar Shell around the Garden Table

Published · Updated

Overlapping cedar scales form a broad shell above a sheltered garden table. Inside, curved timber ribs reveal how the roof is supported, while the open arch frames a smaller kitchen shelter beyond. An oval oak table follows the shape of the fitted bench, whose moss-green cushions and russet pillows sit against the low stone base. Plain plates and folded linen suggest a meal about to begin without covering the natural grain of the wood.

A rain-damp stone path links the dining area to the smaller kitchen, where a compact counter and sink fit beneath a second curved roof. A shaded lamp lights the work surface and rough stone behind it. Ferns grow close to the masonry edges, and autumn leaves lie across the paving outside. The cedar is warmer beneath the roof and silvered at its exposed tips, making the layered construction easy to read. Soft daylight enters through the open sides, leaving the highest recesses darker. The joined shelters create an intimate outdoor room that stays closely connected to the surrounding woodland garden.
