A grass whistle brings a small burst of amusement to a quiet redwood grove. The red-haired woman holds her cupped hands near her lips, concentrating on the thin blade between them. Her friend turns toward the attempt with a broad smile. They sit close enough to share the moment, with their boots resting on the level woodland path.

The dark crochet cardigan has open stitches that reveal the ochre dress beneath it. Beside those warm colors, a pale blue blouse and olive trousers make a softer contrast. Loose hair, a long braid and relaxed knees keep the pair informal. The fallen log supports them comfortably, its ridged bark and worn edge clearly visible below their clothes.

Sword ferns spread around the seat and into the deeper understory. A huge redwood trunk rises beside the women, while more trunks fade into cool mist farther away. Diffuse daylight catches the fern tips and the path’s small stones. The scale of the forest gives the modest joke a generous setting without making the friends seem distant from one another.
