A lyrebird lifts its tail above the forest floor

Published · Updated

A lyrebird lifts its ornate tail above the forest floor while standing on a small earthen mound. Pale feather strands form an airy veil over its back, bordered by stronger curved feathers with brown and cream bands. The bird's dark head, slim bill and two grounded feet remain clearly visible below.

Ferns spread around the mound, and curled leaves rest between rough roots and damp soil. Soft shafts of morning light catch the delicate tail edges against the green woodland beyond. The low side view follows the feathers from their attachment at the rump into the high arch, preserving the bird's natural body and the intricate structure of the lifted display.
