A rafflesia opens on the forest floor
Published · Updated
A rafflesia opens on the damp forest floor among curled leaves and roots. Five spotted red lobes spread around a raised central rim, with pale irregular bumps covering their thick surfaces. The dark opening reveals part of a textured disk deeper inside.
A closed brown bud sits behind the flower near a mossy tree base, and small green ferns provide a delicate contrast beside its broad edges. Filtered daylight reaches the wet leaf litter and picks out the uneven floral texture without flattening the shaded center. The low oblique view includes the whole bloom in its surrounding ground cover, showing its weight and scale without an upright stem or a separate vase.
