A sailing stone leaves a crooked trail
Published · Updated
A sailing stone rests at the end of a crooked trail across a dry lake bed. The rough dark rock sits low in pale cracked mud, its angular surface contrasting with the fine polygonal pattern around it. A shallow groove bends away into the open distance behind the stone.
The low camera position makes nearby cracks visible without losing the scale of the broad plain. Jagged charcoal mountains close the far horizon beneath a heavy cloud bank. A narrow strip of warmer light crosses the middle ground, leaving the foreground cool and shadowed and giving the quiet, stationary scene a strong sense of depth.
