A stereoscope surprise in the cobalt parlor
Published · Updated
A wooden stereoscope brings two friends into the same small moment of surprise. One holds the viewer by its handle after lifting her face from the dark hood. Beside her, the other steadies a cream card carrying two matching landscape views. Their eyes meet above the instrument, and their smiles make the exchange feel immediate.
The cobalt parlor surrounds them with layers of color and collected objects. Curved rattan shelves rise toward the ceiling, supporting trailing plants and small pieces of pottery. Framed landscapes cover the blue wall. Coral fireplace trim warms the far side of the room, while the pale upholstered sofa gives the pair a comfortable place to lean together.
A black corduroy pinafore and narrow striped sleeves contrast with a blush blouse and dark floral skirt. Tights, boots and loosely crossed legs follow relaxed seated poses. Sunlight enters from the tall left window and picks out leaf edges, wood grain and woven cushions. The patterned rug and foreground table keep the room present around the tiny shared discovery.
