An ibex crosses the steep masonry dam

Published · Updated

An ibex crosses the steep masonry dam with its body held close to the sloping stone. Back-curving horns and a short brown coat stand out against the uneven gray courses. Small hoof placements define a careful route across the wall, turning the enormous structure into a series of tiny footholds.

The broad diagonal view leaves room for the surrounding mountain valley and the distant water beyond the dam. Cool daylight separates the rough blocks and narrow mortar seams, while the animal remains distinct within their much larger pattern. The photograph combines an intimate moment of movement with the striking scale of a built surface in a wild landscape.
