An insect hotel fills the autumn border
Published · Updated
An insect hotel fills the autumn border with an intricate arrangement of nesting materials. Timber compartments hold open bamboo tubes, drilled log ends and stacked clay pieces, while fine wire mesh keeps a lower group of pinecones in place. A plain central panel adds narrow vertical slots.
The broad frame stands above the soil on solid posts beneath a shallow protective roof. Mauve asters, copper seed heads and fern leaves gather around its base without concealing the different sections. Soft side light reveals the cut cane rims, wood grain and weathered clay, turning a practical garden structure into a detailed study of small openings and varied natural materials.
