Published · Updated
Basalt columns rise in a rugged stone wall with rough gray faces divided by narrow dark joints. Uneven horizontal fractures break the long vertical shapes into heavy sections, while rusty patches and small surface pits add texture. The columns end at different heights beneath a thin line of dry grass.
Broken stones gather at their feet and lead into deeper shade along the base of the wall. Afternoon sunlight grazes the exposed sides, leaving the recessed joints almost black against a clear blue sky. The low oblique view follows the cliff into the distance and gives its repeated angular forms a strong sense of height, weight and natural irregularity.
