Basketball Tree Gives Brothers a New Target
Published · Updated
A basketball tree gives a sibling game several different directions to take. The older boy holds the ball at his chest and looks toward the next hoop. His younger brother reaches forward after the pass, while their sister waits between them with her feet planted wide. Their faces show the concentration of a game that is still moving.
The sculptural court is built around a branching bronze-colored trunk. Curved arms carry backboards and hoops at different heights, allowing several small games to share the same space. One low basket has drawn another group of children and an adult into play behind the siblings. Broad terracotta steps provide seats for families around the edge of the court.
Golden light filters through the trees and catches the ball, the children’s hair and the pale backboards. Navy stripes, fine patterned shorts and a blue cotton dress bring distinct textures to the foreground. Rust and muted teal surfaces divide the playing area beneath their shoes. The ordinary anticipation of the next pass gives the unusual structure a purpose, making the whole garden feel occupied and alive.
