A brass capsule reaches the mail room

Published · Updated

A brass capsule rests inside an open receiving hatch in an old mail room. Its rounded end catches a warm lamp reflection, while the darker cylindrical body lies securely in a felt-lined tray. The lid stands open on visible hinges behind it. Above the counter, tall pneumatic tubes curve down into a row of broad metal mouths.

The nearest pipe fills much of the right side of the frame. Patches of brown and green patina, screw heads and overlapping joints give the brass a worn, worked surface. More pipes repeat into the distance, held by dark brackets against the pale wall. Their changing curves create a dense overhead structure without hiding the long oak counter below.

Small drawers follow the counter's bend, with a plain black telephone and wire paper basket farther along. Cool light enters through a high gridded window and crosses the floorboards. The warmer lamps keep attention near the open hatch, where one small carrier makes the purpose of the enormous pipe system visible.
