A pneumatic message desk curves along the wall beneath a row of copper pipes. Seated beside their open mouths, a woman examines a brass capsule with its small cap held separately in her other hand. Her plum cardigan, ruffled ivory collar and dark green pleated skirt fit the warm, closely furnished room.

The copper tube office has clamps, worn metal surfaces and a broad wooden counter. A folded sheet of paper waits beside dried orange flowers, while the black telephone catches the desk lamp. These backstage details suggest a message just opened, with the curved pipes and narrow window giving the quiet moment its unusual setting.
