Her Double at the Ferry Terminal
Published · Updated
Her double at the ferry terminal is already seated when the rain-soaked traveller arrives. The two women wear matching camel coats and cream collars, and each has the same tan leather suitcase. Water drips from the standing woman's coat and luggage onto the floor. Across the aisle, her dry counterpart watches calmly, with a single reflection appearing in the dark harbour window behind the benches.
Rain beads on the glass beyond the empty seats. A ferry's lights spread across the water, while fluorescent lamps flatten the waiting room into cool grey and blue. The shuttered counter, plain clock and softly glowing cabinet make the late hour feel ordinary. A small bowl of pumpkins gives the room its October detail. Damp strands of hair and darkened wool contrast with the seated woman's dry fabric and polished boots. This Halloween photograph places a quiet impossibility inside a familiar travel space, suitable for a portrait wallpaper or a seasonal story about an arrival that seems to have happened already.
