Elephant seals rest along a sandy cove as silver surf washes around the dark rocks behind them. In the foreground, a large pale adult brings its whiskered muzzle close to a small dark pup. Their faces meet at the same low level, with the adult's eye nearly closed and grains of sand clinging to both bodies.

Other seals lie farther along the beach in loose, uneven positions. One raises its rounded head while the others remain settled against the sand. Flippers, folded skin and broad resting shapes give each animal a tangible weight. Strands of kelp and shallow wet patches break up the pale foreground without interrupting the quiet encounter.

The coastal bluff curves away into a soft veil of sea mist. Rough dark outcrops punctuate the water, and white foam traces the edges of the incoming waves. Above the headland, broken cloud spreads a cool light across the scene.
