Fallstreak Hole Opens over the Winter Fields

Published · Updated

A fallstreak hole spreads across the sky above quiet winter fields. Small white cloudlets surround a broad blue opening, and fine pale wisps fan through its center. The cloud opening occupies most of the photograph, giving the ordinary rural ground below an unexpectedly dramatic ceiling. Low sunlight warms the left edge of the sky.

Two muddy wheel ruts lead away from the foreground. Frost traces their grassy center and the rough edges of the stubble, turning small blades and clods into pale lines. The track curves gently toward a distant hedge, where bare trees interrupt the low horizon. A dark farm building sits beyond the fields without competing with the sky.

The cloud layer has a broken, pebbled texture rather than a smooth surface. Around the opening, individual patches become smaller and more closely spaced with distance. The thin central streaks allow blue to remain visible between them. Cool shadows in the ruts balance the warmer light near the horizon, connecting the large atmospheric pattern with the small textures of a still winter afternoon.
