Five Costumes at the Bottom of the Silo
Published · Updated
Curved bands of corrugated steel descend toward a circular floor of golden grain. Seen directly from above, the silo becomes an immense ring around five people in Halloween costumes. A beekeeper and a scarecrow support a cardboard knight while a witch and a woman in a fringed shawl help steady him. The knight reaches upward with an open hand, his simple helmet catching the pale light from the opening.
A broken ladder hangs high on the wall, beyond the group. Three pumpkins rest on the grain, and a few white snowflakes drift into the shaft. The tightly spaced metal ribs, rows of rivets and patches of weathering give the surrounding cylinder a strong physical presence. Against its cool grey walls, the wheat makes a warm stage for the small, coordinated effort below. This unusual autumn scene draws its drama from the overhead viewpoint and the distance between the reaching hand and the rim, with handmade costumes adding a playful note to the imposing space.
