Flying Squirrel Reaches the Twilight Trunk

Published · Updated

A flying squirrel reaches toward a rough trunk with its gliding membrane stretched between widely spread paws. The pale underside catches enough light to reveal fine fur and soft folds, while the gray-brown head stays sharply outlined against the darker woodland. A large dark eye faces the tree, and the broad tail trails away behind the body.

The near front paw extends toward the bark as the other limbs hold the membrane open. Its changing angle suggests the final approach to a landing rather than a level passage through the trees. Deep ridges, small moss patches and an overhead branch give the destination a solid presence in the frame. The animal remains small enough for its forest surroundings to matter.

Twilight woodland opens behind the near trunk in layers of straight dark stems. A narrow band of gold lies beneath the blue clouds, with a distant glimpse of water below. Leaves soften the top of the view and gather on the shadowed forest floor. The broad environmental framing joins a brief animal movement to the slow transition from evening into night.
