Nuthatch descends the wet oak trunk
Published · Updated
A nuthatch works its way down an oak trunk headfirst, bringing a bright white breast and dark cap against the deeply furrowed surface. Its pointed bill faces the ground while the short tail follows the line of the body. The unusual downward pose makes this woodland bird the clear center of a narrow vertical scene.
Two small feet grip different levels of the wet bark. Fine feathers overlap along the folded wings, their blue-gray color cooling the warmer browns of the tree. Pale lichen catches small patches of light between the dark channels. Behind the trunk, layers of woodland soften into green and gray, leaving enough detail to suggest depth without competing with the bird.
At the bottom of the photograph, roots and fallen leaves continue the rough texture of the trunk. The restrained color gives the picture a calm atmosphere despite the lively posture. It suits a nature-focused phone background or a woodland collection where close attention to one small animal matters more than a sweeping view.
