Gasholder Garden Opens to the Rainy Sky

Published · Updated

A gasholder garden opens beneath a tall circular frame of cast iron columns. The dark structure rises in several tiers around a green lawn, leaving the gray sky visible through its center. Repeated rings and diagonal braces connect the slender uprights, giving this rainy courtyard a scale far larger than its low planted edge.

Wet paving follows the curve of the lawn and catches pale reflections from above. A light-colored canopy runs along part of the perimeter, its shallow roof sitting well below the towering ironwork. Benches and planted grasses soften the lower level. Their modest height makes the upper frame feel especially open and airy.

Apartment buildings appear through the gaps at the far side, placing the garden within a lived-in city. Their window grids offer a quieter pattern behind the elaborate metal structure. No visitors occupy the paths, and the rain has left the surfaces glossy. The tall view connects close paving, fresh grass and the immense skeletal circle overhead, showing how an old industrial outline can hold a calm outdoor room.
