Giant Bowling Pins Cross the Garden

Published · Updated

Giant yellow bowling pins rise from a coastal lawn around a dark bowling ball. Some stand upright, others lean, and one rests high against a neighbouring pin as though a fall has paused in midair. Red bands circle their narrow necks. The nearest form towers above the path, with weathered paint and curved panel seams making its metal construction clear.

A lower pin leans directly against the broad ball, whose three dark finger holes remain recognizable at this enormous scale. Beyond the sculpture, an empty bench faces the sea beneath wind-shaped trees. Autumn branches frame the upper corners, while low shrubs and rough stones soften the edge of the garden. Late sunlight glances over the yellow curves and leaves long grounded shadows across the grass. Damp gravel in the foreground carries a few small puddles and fallen leaves. The familiar shapes become surprising through their size and arrangement, but the surrounding bench, path and distant coastline keep the whole scene anchored in an ordinary place.
