The Giant Brush with Living Bamboo Bristles

Published · Updated

A giant paintbrush stands upright in a quiet stone courtyard, with living bamboo growing where its bristles would normally be. A long, gently curved wooden handle widens into a broad metal band. Slender green stems rise from the top in a dense crown, their visible nodes and narrow leaves making the living material unmistakable. The familiar tool becomes a surprisingly natural garden object at an extraordinary scale.

The handle shows warm timber grain and a smooth shaped surface. Large bolts near its foot connect it to a low round plinth, while the brushed metal above catches a restrained reflection of the afternoon light. Ferns and bronze grasses gather around the base without hiding its connection to the ground.

Pale stone buildings and autumn trees enclose the courtyard. An empty bench offers a quiet sense of scale, and damp paving reflects patches of warm light beneath the sculpture. The complete object is visible from its base to the leafy crown. This photograph is free to use, including commercially.
