Giant Jingle Bells in the Snowy Court

Published · Updated

A group of enormous red and ivory jingle bells fills a stone courtyard at blue hour. The largest red bell rises above the others, with a thick round loop and heavy rope resting on its snow-dusted top. Raised seams divide the painted shells, and simple circular openings run into narrow slots. Small patches of wear give the metal a used, tactile surface.

The bells stand on dark timber platforms dressed with evergreen branches and long red velvet drapes. Snow catches on the foliage and gathers along the edges of the display. Behind it, pale stone arches support a balustraded terrace, with warm windows glowing beneath steep slate roofs. Garlands follow the line of the arcade.

Wet paving reflects the amber courtyard lamps and the cold blue sky. The familiar shape of a small seasonal ornament becomes the dominant feature of the entire court, creating a bold winter photograph with rich colour, clear materials and a strong sense of scale.
