Glass Prickly Pears in the Adobe Court

Published · Updated

Three tall prickly pears made from stained glass rise from stone beds in a small adobe courtyard. Their oval pads range from pale yellow-green to a deeper leaf green, with soft streaks and ripples inside the glass. Dark metal outlines connect the pads into branching shapes. Fine wire spines catch pinpoints of light around their edges, and small red blossoms add a bright accent at the tips. The nearest sculpture reaches almost to the top of the warm plaster wall.

Sunlight travels through the glass and lays broad green shapes over the adobe and terracotta paving. Ordinary grasses gather around the metal stems, giving the colorful sculptures a quiet natural base. At the back of the court, a small dark bowl sends water into a round basin. A square opening in the wall offers a glimpse of distant foliage, while timber beams shade one side of the entrance. The photograph celebrates the way a familiar plant silhouette changes when it is built from glass, metal and colored light.
