Ice holds the copper rain chain

Published · Updated

A copper rain chain hangs beside a rough stone wall, its flower-shaped cups partly wrapped in clear ice. Pointed petal edges remain visible through the frozen layers, and oval metal links join the cups vertically. Warm copper tones and small green patches of patina contrast with the cooler ice, which contains tiny bubbles and uneven translucent surfaces.

Clear icicles extend from several edges. Beneath the lowest cup, one drop separates from the thawing ice on its way toward a dark stone basin. Rings spread across the water below, catching a little light against the basin's black interior. The suspended drop gives the otherwise still winter scene a small point of movement.

Bare branches and low garden plants soften into the background, with patches of snow among them. Pale sunlight enters from the left and reveals the different textures of metal, ice, masonry, and wet stone. The close vertical view follows the chain from the upper cups to the water beneath, keeping its construction and the changing state of the ice visible together.
