A Key Cutting Machine Follows the Groove
Published · Updated
A key cutting machine holds two small pieces of metal in a carefully aligned pair. The brass original key sits beneath a tracing stylus, while the silver key blank waits under the matching cutter. Squared steel clamp jaws grip their stems, leaving the heads projecting from the shared carriage.
The close diagonal view makes the relationship between the two positions easy to follow. Fine shavings collect around the working groove and across the worn machine bed, where scratches record earlier jobs. A narrow warm light catches the brass edge and bright fragments of metal, with cooler shadows separating the tool heads behind them. The photograph keeps attention on the mechanism, its connections and the precise little task taking place within it.
