Leading Him Home at First Light
Published · Updated
Two children walk home through a pumpkin field at first light. The older girl holds her little brother’s hand as he follows in a dark duffel coat and striped pyjamas. A pale blue blanket trails from his free hand across the frozen vines. Her camel coat, long chestnut hair and burgundy scarf catch a little warmth from the peach-coloured sky.
Frost traces the curled leaves and slender stems on either side of the furrow. Orange pumpkins sit among the pale outlines, gradually becoming smaller toward a wooden picket fence. Beyond it, low mist settles in front of a farmhouse where one window glows amber. The children’s visible breath adds another small sign of the cold morning.
The photograph finds a tender pause after a long autumn night. Joined hands and the trailing blanket give the journey a gentle rhythm, while the distant light offers a clear destination. Its soft colours and ordinary wool clothing make the scene feel quiet, familiar and reassuring.
