Moss ball maples hang above the courtyard
Published · Updated
Moss ball maples hang above the courtyard at different heights beneath a simple timber frame. Fine woody trunks rise from rounded fibrous root balls into airy canopies of lobed leaves. Green, amber and scarlet colors vary between the trees, keeping each small canopy distinct.
Dark cord nets cradle the moss, with taut suspension lines leading to visible beam hooks. A pebble tray waits beneath the nearest ball, while the farther trees frame a pale wall and a small opening of sky. Soft afternoon light reaches moss threads, leaf veins and the worn brick floor, joining the unusual suspended planting to the ordinary materials of the courtyard around it.
