Numbat searches the fallen woodland log

Published · Updated

A woodland numbat lowers its pointed muzzle toward a crack in a fallen log. Its dark eye and narrow facial stripe remain clear above the bark. Rounded ears stand upright, and a long bristly tail extends behind the small body. White bands cross the darker hindquarters while the shoulders carry a warmer reddish tone.

The low viewpoint places the striped coat against a soft background of tall eucalyptus trunks. Four small clawed paws meet the uneven wood, with one nearer forefoot resting close to the opening the animal investigates. Flaking bark breaks into irregular plates beneath it. Curled leaves, thin twigs and dry grasses gather around the lower edge of the log.

Morning light picks out individual hairs along the back and tail. The pale tree trunks and scattered sky gaps add height beyond the close animal portrait. Most of the frame stays within earthy browns, gray bark and muted green. The small searching movement supplies a clear point of attention while the complete body and surrounding woodland preserve a natural sense of scale.
