Petanque inside the copper petal court
Published · Updated
The copper petal court gives a quiet game of petanque an extraordinary setting. One man releases a steel boule with a gentle underhand gesture while his friend watches from the side. His feet remain together inside a small throwing circle. A few steel boules and a small wooden target rest farther across the gravel, making their shared focus immediately clear.
Three enormous curved panels rise around the court like open petals. Their warm rust-colored surfaces carry visible seams and changing patches of weathering. Short supports lift the lower edges just above the coastal grasses. The panels leave broad gaps toward the sea, so the sculpture encloses the game without cutting it off from the landscape.
Pale fog softens the distant cliffs and breaking water. Against that cool background, the metal takes on a rich copper tone. The nearer player’s cable-knit vest and his companion’s dark shirt provide quiet human detail. The low viewpoint follows the gravel toward the game, then upward along the sculptural forms into the open sky.
