The Porcelain Cloud of Open Loops
Published · Updated
An irregular cluster of hollow porcelain forms rests on a broad dark plinth. Rounded lobes of different sizes join into a single sculptural mass, their surfaces built from slender branching rods and open loops. The ivory lattice allows views through several layers at once. Some spaces are small and triangular, while larger openings reveal deep cavities inside the form.
The individual ceramic strands have gentle variations in thickness and softly fused junctions. Their slight unevenness gives the sculpture a handmade character. Three lower portions meet the stone securely, carrying the larger rounded volumes above. Light from the tall window catches the outer edges and leaves the inner layers in a web of pale grey shadows.
The gallery remains quiet behind the object, with a brick arch and a simple wooden bench providing scale. A complex shadow falls across the plinth, repeating the open structure in softened lines. The photograph brings together delicacy and weight: the porcelain looks finely worked and almost airy, yet its complete grounded form has the presence of a substantial object.
