The Raised Key at the Riverboat Landing

Published · Updated

A small iron key hangs between a woman’s fingers just behind the dock fence. Beyond it, a man on the gangplank lifts his silver mask and turns toward her. His paused gesture contrasts with the line of guests continuing aboard the tall riverboat. The foreground key, turning face and stacked decks form a clear path through the photograph.

Rows of lanterns hang above the boat’s white railings, their orange centres faint against the brighter deck lamps. Two dark stacks rise into the violet sky. At the far end, the paddle wheel disturbs the misty river beside the hull. A fiddler sits on a barrel near crates of pumpkins, holding a small pocket of activity beside the boarding line.

The woman’s deep green cape and the dark evening clothes sit quietly among the pale timber. Thin wire crosses rough dock posts, and long light patches follow the planks toward the gangway. The scene catches a strange interruption in an otherwise ordinary departure, as a tiny key seems to hold the attention of both a passenger and the dimly lit boat.
