A River Stone Dragon Above the Courtyard
Published · Updated
A dragon lifts its open jaws above a rain-darkened courtyard. Its long neck curves upward from a heavy rectangular base, with rounded river stones held inside an intricate steel framework. Rust, ochre, grey and charcoal stones create an irregular patchwork along the throat and face. Dark metal horns rise into the cloudy sky, while pointed teeth and broad spines give the otherwise smooth materials a sharper outline.
The construction remains visible throughout the sculpture. Rods loop around individual stones, small connections bridge the gaps, and shaped metal plates run down the back of the neck. A glossy black eye sits among the rougher elements of the head. The familiar scale and texture of the stones make the immense creature feel tangible.
Behind the dragon, a low wall opens onto autumn trees and misty mountains. Small pools of warm light graze the masonry near ground level. Water on the paving reflects the sculpture in broken pieces, extending its colour into the foreground. The empty courtyard leaves the entire curved silhouette visible against the distant landscape.
