Green and gold straw marquetry takes shape

Published · Updated

Straw marquetry turns narrow plant fibres into a surface that seems to change with the light. Copper-gold and muted green strips form alternating blocks, creating a basket pattern across the small panel. One hand steadies a piece while the other smooths it down with a pale bone folder.

The unfinished corner exposes the dark backing and separates the loose strips from the completed design. A brush, scissors and simple glue pot sit around the cork mat, keeping the process visible without crowding it. Fine parallel grain catches the side light differently in each block, making the orderly geometry feel warm, tactile and handmade.
