Swan takeoff scatters the morning water

Published · Updated

Swan takeoff breaks the quiet surface of a lake at first light. Raised white wings spread above the bird as its long neck stretches toward the open water. Two dark feet touch separate patches of spray, leaving a short broken trail behind the body. The orange bill and black face markings remain clear against the cooler blue ripples.

A misty reed bank fills the middle distance. Golden stems rise behind a low wall of rounded gray stones, and bare trees stand farther back in the pale morning haze. The wall leads toward the open channel without closing the view. Warm light catches the wing edges and the tops of the reeds while the foreground water stays dark.

The broad landscape gives the brief movement room to unfold. Long primary feathers separate at the lifted wing tips, and small droplets hang beside the trailing feet. A broken reflection gathers below the breast. Across the lake, peach mist softens the distant shore, setting the sharp burst of motion within a still, spacious morning.
