The Bamboo Sail beside the Reeds

Published · Updated

Curved bamboo ribs rise from the grass into a tall open sail. Crosspieces join the slender poles at intervals, and visible rope lashings hold the intersections together. The swelling outline narrows toward a high tip beside a straighter upright edge. Small stone footings explain how the sculpture meets the ground, while the open lattice allows sky, trees and water to remain visible through its shape.

Evening sunlight catches the bamboo's nodes and natural changes in colour. Some lengths are warm honey brown, others pale green or weathered grey. Bronze reeds line the nearby lake, and the low sun appears again as a bright vertical reflection on the water. Across the shore, dark trees and a scattered stone edge provide a quiet background. The complete sculpture is seen from near its base, making its height clear without hiding the construction. With no covering over the ribs, the sail feels light and transparent. Its simple materials turn a familiar outline into a striking garden feature that changes with the landscape seen through it.
