The Conservatory Afloat on the Canal

Published · Updated

A long glass roof turns this broad canal barge into a floating winter garden. Dark green ribs curve over the planted room, ending in a many-sided bow with a fitted cream bench. Open side windows connect the sitting area to the narrow deck, while a small table and woven chairs keep it comfortably domestic.

Citrus trees grow in terracotta pots beneath the roof, their fruit adding small orange accents among the green leaves. Flowering climbers soften the window frames without hiding them. The raised line of ventilation windows and the folding side panels give the conservatory a practical sense of how it would open to the air.

Thick ropes, black fenders and a visible waterline hold the scene firmly on the canal. Plane leaves drift beside the hull, and an old stone bridge spans the background. Reflected branches break across the glass while sunlight reaches selected plants inside.
