A tall sandstone quarry holds stepped reading galleries, bookshelves, round tables and a broad stair beneath a glass roof.

The Library Inside the Quarry

Published · Updated

The walls remember the quarry even as the room takes on a quieter purpose. Closely spaced marks run across the sandstone from the reading tables to the distant roof. Shelves and armchairs fit beneath broad rock ledges, while a straight stair leads to a higher landing. The enormous chamber becomes understandable through these ordinary places to sit, read and move around.

Daylight from the glass roof travels down the tallest wall, revealing its ridges and uneven colour. The galleries remain shaded, with small lamps marking individual reading places. Round timber tables and dark chairs soften the hard geometry without competing with it. A planted corner adds a little green at floor level, connecting the interior with trees glimpsed beyond the opening above.

The photograph brings together the scale of a landscape and the intimacy of a library. Its tall composition follows the stone upward while keeping the nearest table within reach, making it useful for a phone wallpaper or a page about remarkable interiors.
