The Library inside the White Stone Tunnel

Published · Updated

A pale stone tunnel holds an unexpected place to read. An oak walkway curves above shallow water and widens along the dry wall into shelves, tables and deep green seats. The furniture follows the rock instead of concealing it, leaving the broad natural ceiling open overhead.

Rounded passages lead the eye farther into the cave, where daylight reaches the water and the upper stone. The irregular surface carries scooped hollows, small fractures and patches of cream and gray. Against that rough enclosure, the dark timber gives the library a clear human scale. A handrail follows the water side while books and seating gather against the sheltered wall.

The pool remains quiet beneath the walk. Pale stones show through its clear shallows, and broken reflections soften the boundary between rock and water. A small reading light warms one part of the fitted woodwork, while the nearer recesses stay in shadow. This imagined library feels comfortable because its route, shelves and resting places grow from the shape of the cave. The tunnel remains the largest and most memorable part of the room.
