An entire machinery installation of pipes, valves and pump housings carved from pale wood fills a stone gallery wall.

The Machine Carved Entirely from Wood

Published · Updated

A wall of pipes and machinery fills a quiet stone gallery, but every component is made from pale wood. The grain continues across broad cylinders, curved elbows, valve wheels and rows of small fittings. Round flanges and carved bolts give the familiar mechanical shapes a convincing depth, while slender wooden conduits bend between the lower blocks. Behind them, large plywood panels carry their own flowing patterns.

Soft light enters through tall windows on the left and gathers along the edges of the carving. Small shadows beneath each coupling reveal the careful separation of the parts. The surrounding room is simple: rough stone walls, dark roof beams, worn floorboards and one empty bench. These older surfaces make the pale installation stand out without competing for attention. The photograph shows the entire assembly from its low dark base to the upper pipes near the rafters. At first glance it resembles a working mechanism; a longer look reveals the repeated wood grain and the craft that transforms every detail.
