The Raised Hedge on a Row of Tree Trunks

Published · Updated

A tall rectangular wall of leaves stands above the path on a row of bare tree trunks. The crowns have been trained together into a continuous hedge, leaving generous open gaps beneath them. Through those gaps, a looser garden of shrubs and flowers remains visible. Low clipped borders surround the foot of each row, repeating the straight lines above at a smaller scale. The trunks carry lichen and dark patches of weathered bark, giving the carefully shaped planting a strong connection to living trees.

Light enters from the side and falls across the damp gravel in long broken bands. The high foliage wall provides shade along the walk, while the lower planting catches small bright highlights. At the far end, a plain stone bench closes the view beneath another raised hedge. No one occupies the path, allowing its quiet geometry to lead the eye. The photograph shows how an ordinary row of trees can become a garden boundary with both a solid upper screen and an open, airy base.
