The Rider above the Wooden Drum

Published · Updated

High above the floor of a wooden fairground drum, a motorcycle performer follows the curve of the vertical wall. His machine leans inward, with its tyres pressed against the boards and its front wheel pointing along the worn riding line. Burgundy leather and a plain cream helmet stand out against the weathered timber. The rider looks ahead with a concentrated expression, both hands on the bars as the broad arena drops away below him.

The view crosses the drum from near its upper rim, showing enough of the circular floor to make the height clear. Long upright planks, repeated tyre tracks and darkened joints reveal years of use. An empty spectator rail follows the curve above the rider, while a pale canvas canopy shelters the structure. Beyond it, yellow autumn trees and overcast sky bring quiet daylight into the upper space. The lower wall stays much darker. This contrast keeps the performer visible while preserving the depth and scale of the timber arena around him.
