The Sea Glass Stair Chamber
Published · Updated
Two oval skylights bring soft aqua, amber and milky white light into this sculptural stair chamber. Their rounded glass pieces fit together like smooth pebbles, echoing the irregular mosaic fragments across the curved walls below. A broad wooden stair rises toward a rounded door, with a polished handrail flowing continuously along its outer edge. The warm chestnut grain stands out against the pale grey and green surfaces of the room.
An open view through a tall side window reveals blue sea, a rocky headland and a few trees. Inside, the terracotta floor spreads in loose fan patterns beneath a curved wooden bench, where a ceramic vase holds bare branches. Small patches of winter sunlight travel across the steps and mosaic, making the material details easy to follow. The photograph shows a stairway shaped by gentle curves, from its skylights to its floor joints. Every surface contributes to the room's sheltered coastal character, with warm timber balancing the cooler glass and ceramic tones.
