The Slate Ribbon Spa Hall
Published · Updated
Countless thin layers of grey stone give this immense spa hall a finely textured surface. Tall piers divide the walls into deep recesses, and narrow openings along the roof send cool daylight down their edges. A straight stair rises beside a long reflecting basin, with a slim bronze rail following the flight. At the far end, a towering window frames snow-covered pines and the pale outline of a mountain.
Warm lamps near the floor graze the stone and reveal its varied mineral colours. A low bridge crosses the water, while dark wooden benches occupy dry recesses with folded ivory towels and a small vase of branches. The basin reflects the window and the vertical structure in almost still water, doubling the sense of height. The photograph shows a room shaped by material, proportion and light, with very little decoration needed. Rough stone layers, smooth paving and quiet reflections create a sheltered interior that feels closely connected to the winter landscape beyond.
