Yellow-bellied marmot watches the alpine meadow
Published · Updated
A yellow-bellied marmot rests on a granite ledge above an alpine meadow. Its golden chest catches the sunlight, while darker grizzled fur covers its back and flanks. Small ears, a pale muzzle and fine whiskers make the turned head easy to read. Short dark claws meet the rough rock, and a long furry tail follows the ledge behind.
The foreground stone is broken into irregular blocks with pale lichen and deep narrow cracks. Small white flowers and low green plants grow between them. Beyond the marmot, open meadow drops toward a blue lake. Dark trees gather in pockets around the water and along the lower slopes.
Snow remains in broad gullies beneath the gray ridgeline. The distant peaks are softer than the animal, giving the scene depth while preserving their scale. Clear light touches the fur, nearby plants and exposed mountain faces from the same direction. The tall photograph holds both the small alert animal and the large setting around it, with a quiet pause at the edge of the rock.
