A frigatebird opens its red throat pouch
Published · Updated
A frigatebird stands on a twig nest above low coastal scrub with its red throat pouch fully inflated. The broad scarlet shape hangs directly beneath the neck, edged by small dark feathers and fine wrinkles. A hooked gray bill extends above it, and the bird's clear dark eye faces the sea.
One wing rises behind the body in a fan of layered brown-black feathers, while the other folds along the back. Small feet grip the nest branches beneath the heavy plumage. Rounded green leaves surround the platform, with pale sand and blue water beyond. Soft morning light reveals feather edges, textured skin and rough twigs within the open coastal setting.
